Nav-on-Bike Help

Creating a new route

There are various ways to start creating a new route:

  1. with the toolbar/menu item "New route". Here you can choose whether you want to select the current location as the starting point or whether you want to use waypoints from another route.

  2. by selecting the toolbar/menu item "Waypoint" and marking the desired points of the route one after the other with flags.

  3. by right-clicking on the map and selecting "Set waypoint" from the context menu.

  4. by loading a track list from a device (smartphone, navigation system) or the computer. These tracks can be converted into a route, whereby the distance between the waypoints can be selected.

  5. in the sidebar, enter a place name or a term such as refueling, food... and press Enter. The results are displayed in the "Search" tab. Depending on the settings, a waypoint is set there when a search result is selected.

Connecting devices via USB

All devices that support the Media Transfer Protocol can communicate with Nav-on-Bike via USB. This includes various navigation systems from Garmin®, TomTom® and even cameras such as GoPro Hero®. However, the latter is of course only useful for checking the contents of the camera. However, the devices cannot be connected in normal usage mode. With all navigation devices that I know of, they have to be switched off completely beforehand, connected to the Mac via USB and then restarted. Typically, the user is then asked if they want to turn on file import mode. The current route can be transferred to the navigation device via the "Device/Export route to..." menu.

The "Devices" button on the toolbar opens a window in which the contents of the device are displayed. Files can be moved to or from the Mac using drag-and-drop.

Editing waypoints

Waypoints can be changed in a number of ways:

1- Delete by right-clicking on the waypoint in the waypoint table.

2- Delete in the context menu of the map.

3 - Move on the map. To do this, the waypoint marker must first be selected. This is best done by clicking the mouse cursor on the small circle symbol at the foot of the marker.

The symbol then changes to a rectangle.

Selecting and moving should not be done by fleeting cursor movements, otherwise the map will not recognize any effort to move.

Unfortunately, this procedure is somewhat cumbersome, but it is part of Apple Maps

5 The properties of the waypoints are called up via the context menu of the waypoint table. This can also be used to delete the waypoint.

6. - if the address of the waypoint is not known for an imported or converted route, it can be determined by reverse geocoding using the "Determine address" button. (For security reasons, however, requests to Apple servers in this regard are limited to 50 per minute).

Calculating routes

When creating a new route, the section between two waypoints is recalculated using the corresponding Apple service. The same is the case when setting a new waypoint. A maximum of 2 alternative routes can be selected. This can be changed in the settings.

It is not yet possible for Nav-on-Bike to calculate winding routes; however, this task is usually performed by the motorcycle's navigation device.

Some of the calculated route data cannot be saved and reloaded. It is therefore necessary to recalculate the route before a simulation, for example. This is done via the "Route/Recalculate" menu or via the route list menu. Apple limits the calculation to 50 routes between two waypoints per minute. Therefore, there may be waiting times for long distances. This is displayed in a pop-up window.

Simulation

You can simulate driving along the route with the corresponding acoustic cues. However, I don't know myself what this is good for. But it was fun to program

Tracks

Tracks are position data recorded with the help of GPS. The individual track points are only a few meters apart. Tracks are recorded by most navigation devices and by some smartphone apps such as BMW Connected.

In contrast to routes between two waypoints, they show the actual distance traveled. For example, driving into a parking lot away from the planned route. The track recording is usually interrupted as soon as the journey is paused and continued as a new track.

Tracks can be loaded and edited using Nav-on-Bike.

- Merging tracks that belong to a tour. Right-click to open the context menu of the track list (in the sidebar). Select "Merge tracks" here.
